I hate MySpace, but then again, so does most everyone else. It's not news or anything, but it's just after Christmas and posting is light lately, so I thought I'd get this out of the way before the new year hits and Rand's bugging me to put up actual, relevant posts.
Anyway, I created an account a few years ago, and within the last year I've been letting my account awkwardly hang o...
Well folks, Christmas is past but we're here with the gift that keeps on giving: Another installment of Whiteboard Friday! To round out our last episode of 2007, we brought our good friend and search industry celebrity, Vanessa Fox, into Whiteboard studios to talk about Vertical Search (or Search 3.0, if you will).
Vertical, Blended, Shak...
In the last Whiteboard Friday (12/20/07) Rand talked with Stephan Spencer on the subject of conditional 301 redirects using user agent detection. I thought it might be useful to briefly cover how easy it is to set up Firefox to use a non-default user agent (like Yahoo, Google etc) for testing and development...
Ah, yes, the holidays. That time of year when content writers like myself have to come up with cute new versions of festive songs from years past. After we're done beating our heads against the fake office mantelpieces hung with stockings, and have sufficiently drowned our sorrows in the bitter eggnog of trying to write lyrics that both scan properly and vaguely fit ...
Hey Gang! This week Rand talks to NetConcepts' CEO, Stephan Spencer, about cloaking and redirection via black hat, gray hat, and white hat methods. This is pretty high-level stuff but incredibly interesting, even if it is of questionable Glegality...
It's Thursday, so you know what that means: another installment of Roundup Thursday! This week, I'm implementing a more formal layout that will be executed in every recap post from here on out. Hope you enjoy it!

I know exactly what you should do with your blog because it isn't mine, I don't have to implement any of the changes and if my advice is crap, I don't have to live with the consequences. This said, I've been poking around inside my favourite social networking site and I've...
Never miss a beat. Get Moz Blog email updates daily in your inbox
There have been a number of updates to Google Ad Words and Google Analytics lately so I though the SEOMoz community might want a summary of them. For the most part, I am impressed with the new features and Google should be applauded for listening to their user base and responding with these additions. Improvement #1 - AdWords Geographical Targeting with Google Maps...
We've been hearing from many of our premium members that while they love the information provided in the guides, q+a knowledge base, discount store, tools, link directory and tips, they're not 100% sure how to utilize it all to help them get more traffic. And, even though we're just a few weeks away from launching some exceptional new services (and a new interface for the premium...
Well, we're back from PubCon so here we are with some spankin' new Whiteboard Friday content for ya. This week, Microsoft Live's new Webmaster Tools honcho, Nathan Buggia, joins Rand to discuss what's up at Live, the perils of life in the engine race, how they deal with paid links, and what they're doing to win market share.
Nathan is to Live what Vanessa Fox was to Google, so you c...
It's very late, and I need to be up very early, but the blog - she's a harsh mistress, so let's dive right in.
Guide to Viral Marketing & Linkbait on the Web
I edited this 40+ page guide just before we left for Pubcon last week and remarked to Jane (the primary&...
It's that time again, folks--post conference "Overheard in ________" time (aka Kevin Gleeson's favorite post). This being my first Pubcon experience, I had plenty of quotes rolling around in my head but tried to extract the least inappropriate ones (hey, some things just need to stay [and die] in the barren Vegas desert). That being said, enjoy the best quotes I was able to remember:
⇒ What is "fair use"?
⇒ Does the fair use defense only work in the United States?
⇒ How does fair use related to trademark, copyright and patent law?
⇒ What's the big deal about fair use? Why do we care?
⇒ There are four factors to consider when determining whether you are illegally infringing someone’s copyright or merely employing fair use of the material:
→ The purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is nor nonprofit educational purposes;
→ The nature of the copyrighted work.
→ The amount and substantially of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
→ The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
⇒ But I thought I had a First Amendment Right to free speech.
⇒ Specific Applications.
→ Can I quote someone on my website?
→ Can I post someone else’s graphic on my website if I give credit to them?
→ Is my software vulnerable to fair use?
→ Is parody considered “fair use
