      Hi,

On my website, many product pages were redirected over time to its product category, due to the product being unavailable.

I understand with a 301 redirect, the final URL would have lost about 15% of the link juice.

However - if after some time (e.g. 2 months, or 1 year) I remove the redirection - is the original page going to have any SEO juice, or did it already lose all of it?

      Thanks,

Thank you for all your answers.

EGOL, your link is great and recent. I am removing redirections and inactive product pages are starting to be indexed. Marked your answer as the "Good Answer"

Moosa, your idea is great - will propose to my team.

Thomas, thank you for the links. Yes, the inactive products post is mine too. The other mainly for activating many pages at once though - also replied to you in there.

        Cheers,

Continuity plans often contain information that remains private until needed.

                totally agree with EGOL.

Also, if you are an ecommerce company where products go out of stock for some time and then comes back, why 301 redirect at the first place. My idea is to add pre-booking option or may be a subscribe button for a user so that they can subscribe to get a notification when the product will be back in stock.

Btw, this will also increase your email marketing list that you can use in multiple ways. #justathought!

                  EGOL

Is right John Mueller even backed it up but you have to think Google is doing this to promote https as well as get rid of the mistakes made by 302's, and my opinion is the last three are ones you can have The better.

In my opinion, you can still not go wrong by building a site with architecture in mind.

I know this does not matter much but remember Google is only one search engine while it might be the most important it might not matter as much depending on where you are getting your traffic if you're outside of the country?

Check your redirects and minimize them for end-user as well as yourself. In my opinion

Hope this is of some help,

                  Tom

It used to be that 301 redirects resulted in a loss of linkjuice.  That is no longer true, as stated by John Mueller of Google, and Gary Illyes.  https://outdoorsrank.com/blog/301-redirection-rules-for-seo

However - if after some time (e.g. 2 months, or 1 year) I remove the redirection - is the original page going to have any SEO juice, or did it already lose all of it?

ALL of my 301 redirects will still in place when I am dead.  My continuity plan passed on to my heirs tells them that they better keep all of the 301s in place or face a possible substantial loss of income.  If you remove the 301 you have no guarantee that linkjuice will still fllow.... but you do have a guarantee that any human who clicks that link will find air.

In your situation...  with these URLs being previously redirected... I would simply remove the redirect and use the current page.  It might take Google a long time to reindex them unless you submit each of them for indexing.   I would try that with a few and see if Google accepts them, indexes them and returns them to a reasonable ranking.

Do bulk 301 redirects hurt seo value?

We are working with a content based startup that needs to 301 redirect a lot of its pages to other websites. Will give you an example to help you understand. If we assume this is the startups domain and URL structure www.ourcompany.com/brand1/article What they want to do is do a 301 redirect of www.ourcompany.com/brand1/ to www.brand1.com I have never seen 301 as a problem to SEO or link juice. But in this case where all the major URLs are getting redirected to other sites i was wondering if it would have a negative effect. Right now they have just 20-30 brands but they are planning to hit a couple of hundreds this year.

New Site (redesign) Launched Without 301 Redirects to New Pages - Too Late to Add Redirects?

We recently launched a redesign/redevelopment of a site but failed to put 301 redirects in place for the old URL's. It's been about 2 months. Is it too late to even bother worrying about it at this point? The site has seen a notable decrease in site traffic/visits, perhaps due to this issue. I assume that once the search engines get an error on a URL, it will remove it from displaying in search results after a period of time. I'm just not sure if they will try to re-crawl those old URLs at some point and if so, it may be worth it to have those 301 redirects in place. Thank you.

                      Blog subdomain not redirecting

Over the last few weeks I have been focused on fixing high and medium priority issues, as reported by the Moz crawler, after a recent transition to WordPress. I've made great progress, getting the high priority issues down from several hundred (various reasons, but many duplicates for things like non-www and www versions) to just five last week. And then there's this weeks report. For reasons I can't fathom, I am suddenly getting hundreds of duplicate content pages of the form http://blog.<domain>.com</domain> (being duplicates with the http://www.<domain>.com</domain> versions). I'm really unclear on why these suddenly appeared. I host my own WordPress site ie WordPress.org stuff. In Options / General everything refers to http://www.<domain>.com</domain> and has done for a number of weeks. I have no idea why the blog versions of the pages have suddenly appeared. FWIW, the non-www version of my pages still redirect to the www version, as I would expect. I'm obviously pretty concerned by this so any pointers greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mark

                      Is CloudFlare bad for SEO?

I have been hit by DDoS attacks lately...not on a huge scale, but probably done by some "script kiddies" or competitors of mine. Still, I need to take some action in order to protect my server and my site against all of this spam traffic that is being sent to it. In the process of researching the tools available for defending a website from a DDoS attack, I came across the service offered by CloudFlare.com. According to the CloudFlare website, they protect your site against a DDoS attack by showing users/visitors they find suspicious an interstitial that asks them if they are a real user or a bot...this interstitial contains a Captcha that suspicious users are asked to enter in order to visit the site. I'm just wondering what kind of an effect such an interstitial could have on my Google rankings...I can imagine that such a thing could add to increased click-backs to the SERPs and, if Google detects this, to lower rankings. Has anyone had experience with the DDoS protection services offered by CloudFlare, who can say a word or two regarding any effects this may have on SEO? Thanks

How do 302 redirects from Akamai content targeting impact SEO?

How do 302 redirects from Akamai content targeting impact SEO? I'm using Akamai content targeting to get people from countries and languages to the right place (eg www.abc.123 to redirect to www.abc.123/NL-nl/default.aspx where folks from the Netherlands get their localized site in dutch) and from the edge server closest to them.  As far as I know Akamai doesn't allow me to use anything but a 302.  Anyone run across this?  is this 302 a problem?  I did a fetch as googlebot on my main domain and all I see is the Akamai 302.  I can't imagine this is the first time Akamai has run across this but I would like to know for sure.

If you have an unlimited SEO budget, what would you do?

Here's a bit of background information: I've achieved the targets and is now being offered what is essentially an unlimited budget. I have a nice list of ideas but thought I would the brilliant people here at the SEOMOZ community what they would do. So as to promote as much response as possible, I'm going to keep my list to myself for now. And by "SEO", I mean I can do things like content strategy, blogging, infographics, etc. Shoot away!

Do widgets and gadgets affect SEO?

I have added a number of widgets and gadgets to my site that I suspect act like Iframes. If true do these widgets and gadgets and the content that they are linked to help or hurt my site from an SEO perspective? Examples are facebook gadget, wordpress blidget, weather gadget, google maps widget.
