Article submission web-sites and SEO

Does article submission web-sites have any impact to SEO in these days?
There are a lot of good/not so good article submission databases, but does it really matter if you spend a time to write unique articles for them?
I mean, is it a good way for link-building, or should I spend more time for other parts of SEO?
There are also a special websites (for example SubmitYourArticle) which automate this process, does it make sense to use this services?
Alternates?
Lots of questions…
Update Sorry, I found some good answers only after that I posted this question.

It seems that there are really good answers already in the Q/A:
- http://www.seomoz.org/q/are-there-any-good-websites-to-submit-articles-to

And, the short answer is that you should avoid submitting articles in such directories. Sometimes it will even harm your site.
Also, I noticed that my article on Ezine is copied to a bunch of low-quality web-sites. Of course they removed my on-page links.

Thanks Branden,
This article is about Press Releases, which as I know has even less impact on SEO that article submission.

Hi Dimitri,
Would you mind please posting a link to the other relevant answers?
Branden's answer was very interesting. I'm still a little skeptical as I client i recently picked up actually had a manual penalty for submitting articles to the likes of ezinearticles.com ... these were the examples of 'suspect links' that google gave us during the several rounds of reconsideration requests...
So, I'm pretty reluctant to recommend article marketing at the moment.

Yes they have an impact......less of an impact from years ago, but they still have an impact
Heres an article from a test ran on Matt cutts blog. Somone published an article pointing to mattcutts.com. Anchor text in the article was "Leasreepressmm"... A few days later Matt's blog ranked for this keyword. Proof that article submission still carries a little weight

Does an external link to an image file on my site help my SEO?
I found a few websites that are displaying images from my site. Curiously, they have also linked these images to the source image file on my website. I found these because Moz showed these sites in my list of backlinks. I assume that means it impacts my Domain Authority. But does this actually help me in search engines since it's not linking to a page on my site?

Site URL called out but not clickable.
Hi - I'm after a bit of clarity; if my site URL is referenced in an article, but doesn't actually link through, does this still 'add value' to my seo efforts? Thanks, David

Seo & Real Estate Site?
I am a Realtor. I am also a web developer. I want to make a site about real estate and web development. Primarily how I use my unique skills with web to sell homes. A real estate website caps it's Page Rank very low. There are not a lot of good backlinks to get when compared to the web development industry. There are millions of blogs I participate in about web development/seo. There are a lot of blogs I participate in about real estate too; however, the real estate websites all have low page ranks. This is obviously because the seo/web development industries know how to build page rank, which makes it easier to accumulate it. It's difficult finding good outlets to get link power from in real estate. How confused would google be? Is there an acceptable strategy to making this a reality? Please point out all of the variables I am not seeing. Pros and Cons. I'm not an SEO pro. I would be going for the keyword Pensacola Real Estate. I would accumulate backlinks from the real estate industry and the web design industry. Help 🙂

What benefit does a site with a low DA get from someone guest posting who links to a site with a high DA?
I'm relatively new to link building and although this may be an obvious question I can't seem to find an answer anywhere even after searching Google.

Is it ok for a web design company to have a branded footer link on their client's sites?
Now I know that in general footer links to your site from another site are bad...this is because they are very often spammy...however I like to think that Google is pretty smart and I am of the opinion that a web design company should be able to link back to their own site. Here's why: If a visitor comes across a site that they love the design of, and they want a new website built...why shouldn't they be able to click through to the web designers site? (as long as the client is happy to link to it of course) I also feel that if there are a whole bunch of high authority/pagerank websites have been designed by a web design company and they therefore have a footer link pointing to them, it's probably a pretty good sign that they're a good web designer. Is it not? In saying this I think that the link anchor text should be branded rather than keywords. For example I usually write "Web Design by Static Shift" I'm interested to hear people's thoughts. Am I being blinded by my bias? Thoughts aside, and onto the facts...what are people's experiences with footer links for a web design company. Do they help or hinder?

Are backlinks from sites like diigo useful for SEO?
I read an SEO article that recommended getting backlinks from social bookmarking sites like diggo.com. Does anyone have any thoughts on the usefulness of these types of links?
