      Hey everyone,

I have another question regarding duplicate content. We are planning on launching a new sector in our industry to satisfy a niche. Our main site works as a directory with listings with NAP. The new sector that we are launching will be taking all of the content on the main site and duplicating it on a subdomain for the new sector.

We still want the subdomain to rank organically, but I'm having struggles between putting a rel=canonical back to main site, or doing a self-referencing canonical, but now I have duplicates.

The other idea is to rewrite the content on each listing so that the menu items are still the same, but the listing description is different. Do you think this would be enough differentiating content that it won't be seen as a duplicate?

Obviously make this to be part of the main site is the best option, but we can't do that unfortunately.

Last question, what are the advantages or disadvantages of doing a subdomain?

        Hi there I just want to make sure I'm interpreting the question right so do let me know if any of the below is false;

        • You're launching a website subdomain to target a different industry niche
        • You cannot target this niche with your main site
        • Your subdomain will be duplicating the content on your main site and you are concerned about the drawbacks of that duplicate content.

One of my questions would be - if you can't target this niche on the main site, why is the strategy to copy main site content over? It seems as though if duplicate content will successfully target this niche on a subdomain, surely it can do the same on the main domain? If it is the case that there needs to be differentiation then it'd be a good idea to consider how to create content specifically targeting that niche. Search engines are doing everything they can to make it so that their definition of a good site aligns with users' definition of a good site, it's worth considering why it's so difficult to figure out how to get these pages ranking - is it because we're trying to create something that actually isn't targeted to users in a way that'll be successful even if it does rank?

You're right, if you canonicalise the new pages to the old pages they are duplicating, then by design the new ones are unlikely to rank. If you don't canonicalise them, you aren't giving either the old pages or the new pages a fair shot because they aren't offering anything new for the search terms they do target, and you're ignoring the opportunity to cover off new and more specific search terms you couldn't before.

Without knowing the exact details of the situation I would say; don't duplicate main site content onto this subdomain, start from scratch, find out what people in this niche want, what they are searching, what matters to them, design the subdomain to fit that need and only consider the main site in terms of avoiding competing with it.

Re: the issue of whether to go subdomain at all, there is evidence that subdomains don't share as much authority with the site overall as subdirectories do, it depends on how different this new niche is from your main offering. Does it make sense for a user to find this whole other niche in a subdirectory of your main site, or is the niche dissimilar enough that you should differentiate it with a subdomain?

I hope that helps, I think I've probably given more questions than answers but I think they are important questions for your business to consider. If I've misunderstood or if there's anything you'd like to discuss, do message back.

Do links from subdomains pass the authority and link juice of main domain ?

Hi, There is a subdomain with a root domain's DA  90. I can earn a backlink from that subdomain. This subdomain is fresh with no traffic yet. Do I get the ranking boost and authority from the subdomain? Example: I can earn a do-follow link from **https://what-is-crm.netlify.app/ **but not from https://netlify.app

Do content copycats (plagiarism) hurt original website rankings?

Hi all, Found some websites stolen our content and using the same sentences in their website pages.  Does this content hurt our website rankings?  Their DA is low, still we are worried about the damage about this plagiarism. Thanks

Pages mirrored on unknown websites (not just content, all the HTML)... blackhat I've never seen before.

Someone more expert than me could help... I am not a pro, just doing research on a website... Google Search Console shows many backlinks in pages under unknown domains... this pages are mirroring the pages of the linked website... clicking on a link on the mirror page leads to a spam page with link spam... The homepage of these unknown domain appear just fine... looks like that the domain is partially hijacked... WTF?! Have you ever seen something likes this? Can it be an outcome of a previous blackhat activity?

          Preventing CNAME Site Duplications

Hello fellow mozzers! Let me see if I can explain this properly. First, our server admin is out of contact at the moment,
so we are having to take this project on somewhat blind. (forgive the ignorance of terms). We have a client that needs a cname record setup, as they need a sales.DOMAIN.com to go to a different
provider of data. They have a "store" platform that is hosted elsewhere and they require a cname to be
sent to a custom subdomain they set up on their end. My question is, how do we prevent the cname from being indexed along with the main domain? If we
process a redirect for the subdomain, then the site will not be able to go out and grab the other providers
info and display it. Currently, if you type in the sales.DOMAIN.com it shows the main site's homepage.
That cannot be allow to take place as we all know, having more than one domain with
exact same content = very bad for seo. I'd rather not rely on Google to figure it out. Should we just have the cname host (where its pointing at) add a robots rule and have it set to not index
the cname? The store does not need to be indexed, as the items are changed almost daily. Lastly, is an A record required for this type of situation in any way? Forgive my ignorance of subdomains, cname records and related terms. Our server admin being
unavailable is not helping this project move along any. Any advice on the best way to handle
          this would be very helpful!

          Indexing content behind a login

Hi, I manage a website within the pharmaceutical industry where only healthcare professionals are allowed to access the content. For this reason most of the content is behind a login. My challenge is that we have a massive amount of interesting and unique content available on the site and I want the healthcare professionals to find this via Google! At the moment if a user tries to access this content they are prompted to register / login. My question is that if I look for the Google Bot user agent and allow this to access and index the content will this be classed as cloaking? I'm assuming that it will. If so, how can I get around this? We have a number of open landing pages but we're limited to what indexable content we can have on these pages! I look forward to all of your suggestions as I'm struggling for ideas now! Thanks Steve

Hiding content or links in responsive design

Hi, I found a lot of information about responsive design and SEO, mostly theories no real experiment and I'd like to find a clear answer if someone tested that. Google says:
Sites that use responsive web design, i.e. sites that serve all devices on the same set of URLs, with each URL serving the same HTML to all devices and using just CSS to change how the page is rendered on the device
https://developers.google.com/webmasters/smartphone-sites/details For usability reasons sometimes you need to hide content or links completely (not accessible at all by the visitor) on your page for small resolutions (mobile) using CSS ("visibility:hidden" or "display:none") Is this counted as hidden content and could penalize your site or not? What do you guys do when you create responsive design websites? Thanks! GaB

Will Google Penalize Content put in a Div with a Scrollbar?

I noticed Moosejaw was adding quite a bit of content to the bottom of category pages via a div tag that makes use of a scroll bar. Could a site be penalized by Google for this technique? Example: http://www.moosejaw.com/moosejaw/shop/search_Patagonia-Clothing____
